Creating new data sources through the API

Is it possible to create new data sources via the REST API? I could not find documentation in the current API reference just for Panel Definition and Panel Datasource itself.

I saw that I can get the metadata of a panel data source via the /api/metadata endpoint but cannot POST to it.

We would like to automatically deploy multi-instance and single-instance data sources for party and event and ideally standalone data sources.

Please let me know if it is somehow possible or is it somehting for the future.
